"Back to the Classroom" - Environmental Law in A Polarized Era

Professor Michael Vandenbergh
David Daniels Allen Distinguished Chair in Law
Director of the Climate Change Research Network
Co-Director of Energy, Environment and Land Use Program

Law School
Flynn Auditorium

Environmental issues are among the most polarized in an increasingly polarized society.  How can we teach environmental law in a way that enables students to think critically and reaches students across the political spectrum? How can we analyze environmental problems and develop viable new measures in the face of a polarized, gridlocked system?

This discussion will explore the cutting-edge research underway at Vanderbilt in law, policy, and social science that explores the psychology of polarization, promising new ways to bypass polarization, and the ways environmental lawyers, managers, and advocates can succeed in a polarized era.

Antitrust policy is at an inflection point, with thinkers like Professor Lina Khan, Chair of the FTC, pursuing a regulatory agenda that runs contrary to the view that has prevailed among policymakers for over forty years: that antitrust exists to protect consumers from high prices and that markets are largely self-correcting. Professor Allensworth will explain the current crisis of identity in antitrust law, describe its legal and ideological origins, and identify the often-overlooked role that courts and legal precedent must play in shaping antitrust law’s next equilibrium.

Make a Gift to Our Class Scholarship

Five years ago, in honor of our 20th Reunion, many members of the class contributed to create Law Class of 1998 Scholarship. Scholarship support is as important now as it was five years ago, and it would be wonderful to grow the scholarship in recognition of our 25th Reunion and to provide additional support for future generations of law school students. We hope you will join us in making a gift or pledge in honor of this special occasion. Whether you support the class scholarship or the annual fund, you can make a gift online.
