At the same time that civil rights attorneys were changing twentieth-century American society, they were inventing a new kind of lawyering.  Students in American Legal History explore the origins and emergence of civil rights lawyers, from the first African Americans admitted to state Bars in the North before the Civil War through the NAACP Legal Defense Fund’s early lawsuits challenging racial segregation.  Professor Sharfstein will discuss the professional and cultural contexts that produced the first modern civil rights lawyers as well as the ways in which these pioneering practitioners enlisted the courts in the struggle for liberty, equality, and citizenship.
